At the inaugural Bali Robotic Surgery Symposium hosted by Bali International Hospital (BIH) in Indonesia, the Edge Medical® multiport robotic surgical system successfully performed a live-broadcast, high-difficulty robot-assisted combined procedure — transabdominal right adrenalectomy plus cholecystectomy. This marks the first time in Indonesia that robot-assisted surgery has been used to complete two different specialty procedures in a single operation, representing a significant breakthrough for the country's robotic minimally invasive surgery landscape.

 Helps Bali International Hospital Deliver a Standout First-Anniversary Performance

BIH is located in the Sanur Special Economic Zone on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Positioned as a premium international-standard general hospital, it aspires to become one of Southeast Asia's leading medical tourism destinations. The symposium coincided with BIH's first anniversary of operations and drew approximately 80 surgical experts across multiple specialties, including general surgery, urology, breast surgery, and thoracic surgery. The event was designed to facilitate knowledge sharing, live observation of robotic surgical procedures, and dialogue on the future of minimally invasive surgery.

At this landmark event, the indigenously developed Chinese Edge Medical multiport robotic surgical system helped the hospital deliver a standout first-anniversary performance through an "Indonesia-first" live combined robotic surgery, demonstrating technical excellence and international vision while advancing the long-term vision of the Sanur Special Economic Zone as a world-class healthcare service and medical tourism destination.


An Indonesia First

Two Specialties, One Procedure

The live-broadcast surgery was performed by Prof. Iswanto Sucandy (MD, FACS), an internationally renowned hepatobiliary surgeon.

During the procedure, Prof. Sucandy — who brings over 15 years of robotic surgery experience — operated the Edge Medical robot to sequentially complete a right adrenalectomy and a cholecystectomy in a single session. The entire operation was completed in just one hour, with intraoperative blood loss of only 2 milliliters. The orderly sequencing of two different specialty procedures within one surgery placed extremely high demands on both the robotic system's cross-specialty adaptability and the surgeon's comprehensive procedural planning capabilities. According to local media reports, this was the first time in Indonesia that robot-assisted surgery had been used to complete two different specialty procedures in a single operation.

Following the procedure, Prof. Sucandy offered a positive assessment of the Edge Medical robot's performance, specifically noting the excellent coagulation and cutting performance of the energy instruments and the system's strong cost-effectiveness.

Speaking at the symposium, he further noted: "Robotic surgery has transformed the way we approach complex digestive surgery. This technology provides greater flexibility, precision, and control, enabling surgeons to operate more safely, improve clinical outcomes, and deliver higher-quality care to patients."

At the post-event press conference, BIH CEO Dr. Noel Yeo stated: "This is not only a milestone for BIH, but also for the Sanur Special Economic Zone and Indonesia's broader healthcare ecosystem. It demonstrates that international collaboration, clinical education, and knowledge transfer are essential to elevating Indonesia's healthcare capacity." He specifically emphasized that the application of robotic surgical technology is a vital component of BIH's strategy to advance healthcare services through international collaboration, clinical education, and the deployment of cutting-edge medical technologies, while supporting the development of Indonesia's medical talent.

Compared with conventional surgery, robotic surgical technology inherently offers multiple advantages, including superior three-dimensional visualization, enhanced instrument dexterity, and the ability to achieve optimal precision during complex minimally invasive procedures. Depending on the patient's specific condition, the technology can also enable smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.
