The 26th Pearl River Urology Minimally Invasive Technology Conference was recently held in Guangzhou. Over a hundred urology specialists from China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Thailand, and other countries gathered to exchange insights on frontier technologies and clinical practices in minimally invasive urology. Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University, as the host institution, drew the spotlight with its in-depth application outcomes of the Edge Medical® surgical robot.
Since officially introducing the Edge Medical® multiport robotic surgical system in November 2023, the Department of Urology at Zhujiang Hospital has embraced the philosophy of "clinical demand driving technological iteration." Within two years, the center achieved a leap from first-case exploration to large-scale application. As of June 30, 2026, the hospital had completed a cumulative total of 1,758 robotic surgeries, of which 1,256 were urological procedures, accounting for 71.4%. With over 1,700 domestic robotic surgeries performed at a single center, Zhujiang Hospital ranks among the top nationwide.
Prior to the conference, the "2026 Pearl River Urology Surgery Week" took place from July 6 to 10. Over five surgical days, the Edge Medical® robot consecutively completed 18 surgical demonstrations — 16 local procedures and 2 cross-city remote procedures — covering acomprehensive range of complex surgeries including partial nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, radical prostatectomy, and radical cystectomy. This fully demonstrated the system's adaptability and consistent performance across the full spectrum of urological procedures.
The two remote procedures connected Guangzhou with Jiangmen and Guangzhou with Qingyuan, respectively. Leveraging the Edge Cloud® remote surgery system, the console surgeon operated from Zhujiang Hospital in Guangzhou to perform real-time surgeries on patients in distant cities, once again validating the Edge Cloud® system's low-latency transmission and precise control capabilities in cross-city remote scenarios. The routine deployment of remote surgery offers a viable technological pathway for expanding access to high-quality medical resources.
The Surgery Week assembled leading urology experts from home and abroad. Academician Zhang Xu, Professor Lin Tianci, Professor Xu Abai, Professor Huang Jian, and other renowned Chinese specialists led multiple high-difficulty surgical demonstrations, fully showcasing the technical advantages of the Edge Medical® robot in complex urological procedures. Notably, Professor Njinou Ngninkeu Bertin from the Ormeaux Clinic in Le Havre, France, collaborated with Professor Xu Abai to perform a robot-assisted surgery, underscoring the continued deepening of the Edge Medical® robot's role in international academic exchange and multicenter collaboration.

In his conference address, Professor Xu Abai stated:"It has been nearly three years since the Department of Urology at Zhujiang Hospital introduced the Edge Medical® robot. From initial exploratory use to today's routine operations of multiple cases per day, the system's stability, instrument versatility, and operational fluency have all met clinical practice standards. The accumulation of 1,700 cases is not merely a number — it represents the achievement of a complete system encompassing training, proctoring, and independent surgical practice."

Professor Njinou Ngninkeu Bertin from France shared after the procedure: "This was my first time using the Edge Medical® robot, and I was deeply impressed by the system's control precision and 3D high-definition imaging quality. Operating alongside Chinese experts gave me a genuine sense of the rapid advancement of Chinese surgical robotics technology. I look forward to expanding collaboration at European centers in the future."

This conference was not only a comprehensive showcase of Zhujiang Hospital's Edge Medical® robot application outcomes but also a significant milestone for domestic surgical robotics technology toward large-scale, standardized clinical application in urology. With the continued deployment of the Edge Cloud® remote surgery system and the ongoing expansion of multicenter collaboration networks, Edge Medical® is driving technological innovation through clinical evidence, contributing a Chinese solution to the intelligentization and democratization of global surgical care.
