Recently, Shenzhen Edge Medical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Edge Medical," stock code: 02675.HK) completed an investment in PrimalVerse (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. (PrimalVerse). This investment will help Edge Medical® further position itself in the "AI + Surgical Robotics" embodied intelligence field, establish a foundation for collaboration with world model technology teams, and drive the evolution of surgical robots from precision execution tools into intelligent surgical infrastructure capable of scene understanding, risk prediction, and collaborative operation.
PrimalVerse is an artificial intelligence company focused on the foundational research of multimodal 4D world models, founded by a world model team with Tsinghua University background. The company uses native 4D world representation as its core, building a unified model system covering dynamic world reconstruction, generation, simulation, and agent training, and advancing application exploration in areas such as embodied intelligence, gaming and film, and autonomous driving. Its technical directions include 3D/4D reconstruction, neural rendering, physical simulation, robot training, and world state prediction.
In plain terms, a 4D world model adds a time dimension on top of three-dimensional space. It not only describes the shape, position, and spatial relationships of objects, but also seeks to understand how objects move, how they interact, and what changes may occur after an action takes place.
Surgery is a continuously evolving and highly complex physical dynamic process. Instrument positions, tissue states, the surgical field, and procedural workflows all change as the operation progresses. The combination of 4D world models and surgical robotics technology is expected to provide new technical pathways for research in surgical scene modeling, operational training, workflow analysis, and intelligent assistance.
Edge Medical® is primarily engaged in the design, development, and manufacturing of minimally invasive surgical robots and instruments, providing innovative solutions for surgical procedures. The company has established a product portfolio covering multi-port laparoscopy, single-port laparoscopy, natural orifice surgery, and tele-surgery systems.
Building on the respective technical expertise of both parties, Edge Medical® and PrimalVerse plan to conduct technical research and application exploration in areas including medical-scenario-specific world models, embodied intelligent surgical robots, and intelligent simulation training platforms.
The related collaboration is currently focused on foundational technology research and application exploration, and does not indicate that the relevant technologies have been developed into specific product features or approved for clinical use. Subsequent product development and clinical applications will strictly comply with applicable laws and regulations, medical device registration and approval requirements, and clinical safety standards.
Traditional surgical robots primarily address the problem of "hands" — that is, improving the precision, stability, and flexibility of surgeons' operations through robotic systems. With the development of AI technology, the next generation of surgical robots must also address the problem of "understanding": not only seeing the surgical field, but also understanding the relationships between instruments, tissues, space, and procedures. Embodied intelligence emphasizes the closed loop of "perception — decision — action — re-perception" formed by an agent's real-time interaction with the environment through a physical entity.
As artificial intelligence and robotics technologies continue to advance, "AI + Surgical Robotics" has become a topic of global interest across the technology and healthcare industries. Elon Musk has publicly predicted that robots may eventually reach or even surpass the operational level of excellent human surgeons, a view that has sparked widespread discussion about the prospects for surgical robot autonomy. In the long run, higher levels of robot autonomy represent an important research direction for intelligent surgery.
As AI technology continues to develop, the surgical robotics industry is gradually transitioning from competition based solely on hardware capabilities to a new stage of coordinated development across robot bodies, intelligent models, data systems, and clinical scenarios. This investment in PrimalVerse will further enrich Edge Medical's® technology portfolio in the field of intelligent surgery. Going forward, the company will continue to be guided by clinical needs and patient benefits, steadily exploring the application value of artificial intelligence in surgical robotics, medical training, and other scenarios.
Dr. Wang Jianchen, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Edge Medical®, stated: "Surgical robots are entering a critical stage of intelligent upgrading. 4D world models provide a new technical pathway for robots to understand and simulate complex physical environments. Through our collaboration with PrimalVerse, we hope to explore the deep integration of AI and surgical robot systems, and — under the premise of physician-led, safe, and controllable operations — explore ways to enhance the application value of surgical robots in intelligent assistance, simulation training, and other scenarios, further empowering doctors and benefiting patients."
