Expanding Presence in South America! Edge Cloud® Remote Surgery System of Edge Medical Granted ANVISA Approval in Brazil, Continuously Extending Global Footprint in Remote Surgery
2026.09.23

On September 8, Edge Medical® marked another major milestone in its globalization strategy: its self-developed Edge Cloud® Remote Surgery System has officially obtained market authorization from the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA).

This marks another key breakthrough for the company in the South American market, following the approval of the Edge® Multi-port Laparoscopic Surgical Robot in Brazil. It signifies that Edge Medical®’s core remote surgery products have officially secured compliance access to the Brazilian market. The approval further complements Edge Medical®’s product portfolio in Brazil, extending from robotic surgery platforms to remote surgery capabilities, and lays an important foundation for the company to deliver more complete robotic minimally invasive surgical solutions to Brazil and the broader South American market.

From "Robots Entering Brazil" to "Remote Capabilities Entering Brazil"

Edge® Robotic Surgical Solutions Further Enhanced

Remote surgery is far more than simply connecting robots to a network; it is a complex system integrating multiple technologies such as robot control, communication transmission, image processing, network security and clinical collaboration. As a critical data hub connecting the physician console and the patient-side cart, the Edge Cloud® Remote Surgery System supports real-time transmission of data including remote operation commands, 3D endoscopic images and audio-visual information. It enables physicians to perform surgical operations via the patient-side robotic system from a remote console across hospitals, regions and even national borders, providing technical support for cross-regional and transnational robotic surgery.

The Edge Cloud® Remote Surgery System can be deployed with Edge® surgical robots across urology, general surgery, gynecology, thoracic surgery and other minimally invasive surgical specialties. It can also work in synergy with the previously ANVISA-approved Edge® Multi-port Laparoscopic Surgical Robot. This means Edge Medical®’s footprint in the Brazilian market has expanded from single robotic device authorization to an integrated solution covering both robotic platforms and remote surgery technology.

Going forward, with the successive market launch of products including the Edge® Single-port Laparoscopic Surgical Robot, single-port & multi-port integrated robotic system and super multi-port robotic system, the company is expected to further leverage the platform advantages of combining multi-port, single-port and integrated systems with remote surgery technology, providing local healthcare institutions with a wider selection of robotic surgery solutions across more specialties, procedures and application scenarios.

From Cross-provincial, Cross-national to Transcontinental

Edge® Remote Surgery System Enters Scale-up Practical Phase

Behind the international market access lies Edge Medical®’s long-term continuous investment in remote surgery technology and large-scale practical implementation. Focusing on key technologies such as ultra-low latency, high fidelity, multi-network integration, secure encrypted transmission and remote dual-control, Edge Medical® has continued to advance the R&D and clinical validation of its remote surgery system, gradually breaking the physical boundaries of robotic surgery limited to a single operating room and a single hospital.

In recent years, Edge Medical® has carried out extensive cross-provincial, cross-national and transcontinental remote surgery practices, completing over 700 remote procedures worldwide. In October 2025, a 12,035-kilometer transcontinental remote robotic human surgery was successfully performed between Brazil and Kuwait. The procedure was conducted using the Edge® Surgical Robot paired with the Edge Cloud® Remote Surgery System, and was officially certified by Guinness World Records™ as the "Farthest Distance Robotic Remote Surgery", setting a benchmark achievement for international medical collaboration.

Meanwhile, Edge Medical® has been continuously advancing the transition of remote surgery technology from feasibility verification to evidence-based medicine. Related randomized controlled trial research on robotic remote surgery has been published in The BMJ, a leading international medical journal, providing further evidence for the safety, efficacy and clinical application of robotic remote surgery. Through continuous technology iteration and clinical practice, Edge® remote surgery has evolved from early exploration to a new stage of multi-regional, multi-departmental and scaled application. This ANVISA approval in Brazil will further drive the technology from international clinical validation to overseas market implementation.

Deepening Presence in Core South American Markets

Remote Medical Care Unlocks More Inter-institutional Resource Collaboration

Brazil is one of the largest countries in Latin America in terms of population and healthcare system capacity, and also a key medical device market in the region. Its vast territory and uneven distribution of high-quality medical resources across regions make cross-regional medical collaboration, subspecialty capacity advancement and innovative digital medical technologies highly practically valuable.

For remote robotic surgery, its value lies not only in "enabling surgery to be performed by physicians farther away", but more importantly, in extending the expertise of top-level surgeons across physical distances through robotic and communication technologies. It provides a new tool for clinical collaboration, technical guidance and professional capacity building between medical institutions in different regions.

Looking ahead, Edge Medical® will continue to accelerate the globalization of its remote surgery technology, continuously advance regulatory approval, clinical validation and commercial localization of its products across different countries and regions, and build a more comprehensive international business system centered on robotic surgery platforms, remote systems, and physician training. By breaking the geographical limits of surgical capabilities through technology, it will bring innovative robotic surgical services to more physicians and patients — which is the long-term value that Edge Medical® has been pursuing in remote surgery.
